Gitarist van cultband Cul de Sac en solo akoestische 12- en 6-string gitarist, ietwat of heel veel in de Takoma traditie van Basho en Fahey, maar volledig zwaar geniaal op zichzelf. Jones speelde een belangrijke rol bij de (her-)mastering van de originele “Twilight Peaks” tapes en was een enorme bron van inspiratie en energie voor het productieproces van de re-issue van deze onmisbare opnames uit het œuvre van Robbie Basho. Gunn-Truscinski Duo (VS)

Een van de interessantste Amerikaanse gitaristen van dit moment is zonder twijfel Steve Gunn, een gitarist die bewust vermijdt om zichzelf te herhalen en constant naar nieuwe expressiemogelijkheden zoekt. Met zijn titelloze solo debuut (Onomato 2007) zette hij een koers in van ‘american primitivisme’ met marokkaanse- en raga-invloeden, om vervolgens via country blues op zijn tweede CD ‘Sundowner’, uit te komen bij de psych blues van zijn derde album ‘Boerum Palace’ (CD, Three Lobed Recordings 2009) en waarop hij met zang ook zijn songwriter kwaliteiten toonde. De volgende logische stap voor Steve Gunn was het om meer te gaan samenwerken met andere muzikanten. Nieuw is zijn samenwerking met John Truscinski, een drummer die hij al goed kende uit het drone folk trio GHQ waar hij ook deel van uit maakte. Van het Gunn-Truscinski Duo verscheen bij Three Lobed Recordings de LP ‘Sand City. Weliswaar ligt op dit album de leidende rol duidelijk bij het gitaarspel van Steve Gunn, maar bij deze vier direct in de studio opgenomen stukken is het zeldzaam om te horen hoe beiden op elkaar ingespeeld zijn. Compositie, improvisatie en intuïtie zijn hier geheel vervlochten.

Cian Nugent (IR)

Met zijn debuut CD ‘Childhood, Christian Lies And Slaughter’ (Incunabulum/audioMER. 2009) liet de jonge Ierse gitarist Cian Nugent al horen dat zijn instrumentale muziek weliswaar duidelijk beïnvloed was door oude countryblues en gitaar grootheden als John Fahey en Robbie Basho, maar dat hij ook wat ideeën en techniek betreft alles in huis had om verder te groeien. Deze belofte maakt hij meer dan waar op zijn tweede CD ‘Doubles’ die bij VHF Records uitkwam. Duidelijk is dat Cian Nugent zijn oor te luisteren heeft gelegd bij klassieke hedendaagse componisten. In de twee lange composities die op ‘Doubles’ te vinden zijn, onderzoekt hij de mogelijkheden om met spanningsbogen te werken en hoe hij ook andere instrumenten in zijn composities kan betrekken. Net als James Blackshaw en Alexander Turnquist vermijdt Cian Nugent overtuigend het gevaar om als gitarist in herhaling en eenduidigheid verstrikt te raken.

Cam Deas & Sheldon Siegel (VK/BE)

Toen de jonge Engelse gitarist Cam Deas vorig jaar zijn studie muziek aan de Universiteit van Sheffield afrondde, werd hij geïnspireerd door de vrije improvisaties van saxofonist en componist Anthony Braxton om de klankmogelijkheden van zijn gitaarspel en zijn 12-snarige akoestische gitaar onder de loep te nemen. Dit onderzoek leidde al snel tot de compositie ‘Quadtych’. In dit tamelijk abstracte vierdelige stuk past hij diverse toe speeltechnieken en zoekt tevens de grenzen op van de dynamische mogelijkheden van zijn akoestische gitaar. Daarnaast komt in de afzonderlijke delen van ‘Quadtych’ direct en indirect de invloed naar voren van de gitaarlegende John Fahey en de componisten Olivier Messiaen, Iannis Xenakis en Charlemagne Palestine. De lp ‘Qudtych Volume One’ met daarop de eerste twee delen, is een uitgave van Cam Deas’ eigen label Present Time Exercises.

A new name in our Scandinavian jam rolodex is Martin Herterich, a youngish Swede with a closet full of vintage synth rigs and drum boxes and old echo units who tracks woozy instrumental mood-grooves under the Sand Circles moniker and helps book shows in his local art hoods. Midnight Crimes is his debut EP and showcases the prism of styles he can navigate, from minor key shadow-trance soundtracking to more propulsive fog-rhythm cruiser themes to weirdo hook-heavy synth-bounce anthems (drink in “Infinity Pool” for proof). A focused language of cool sonic hieroglyphs get raked and shaped in the Sand Circles zen rock garden, quite pumped to survey what comes next. Pro-dubbed tapes with photocopied and dual-layer silkscreened J-cards, plus a hand-numbered insert.

6 tracks full of lo-fi synth vibes and broken drum machines open up to you giving all the keys from all the doors in this world. Now you have to make a decision. Road movie melodies go on the radio while you\re passing by white castles and huge slow elephants. Their caballeros flourish hands and fire pink and yellow signal stars. Painty sound makes your moves thoughtless and spontaneous. Walking changes with flying but you do not notice this. You look. God, you love to look now.

Quilts is Frida-Li Lovgren. The songs were recorded in Stockholm and Visby. She has recorded sounds that have been going around in her head for hours, days. She has recorded the same thing for about 100 times and then the best recording is chosen. The raw and direct feeling is essential. The sounds are outerworldly, yet firmly rooted in the soil.

YANNICK FRANCK (BE)

Yannick Franck (°1981, Liège, Belgium) is a sound and visual artist. He lives and works in Gent, Belgium. He runs the independent label Idiosyncratics Records. He is the founder of electroacoustic project Y.E.R.M.O. (Venice Biennial 2009, Pavilion of Luxembourg) in which he’s active since 2005 with guitarist Xavier Dubois and drummer Jason Van Gulick. He has collaborated with Gast Bouschet & Nadine Hilbert, Craig Hilton and currently works on several projects with Pietro Riparbelli / K11, Esther Venrooy, Jean-Marie Matoul, Philippe Petit, Steve Kaspar, Stuart Dahlquist, Christian Renou, alone or together with Y.E.R.M.O.. He works as a composer and sound designer for the National Theater of the French Community in Brussels and with companies Artara and Trotz Ensemble. He has exibited his artworks and performed in many countries, including Russia, United States and most of European countries.

Jozef Van Wissem is renowned for his ability to appropriate the Renaissance and Baroque lute in the context of contemporary experimental music. By cutting and pasting classical pieces, reversing melodies, “medieval sampling” and adding processed field recordings, Jozef is able to bridge the language of 17th century music with that of the 21st century without compromising the timbre and resonance of traditional lute playing techniques. Van Wissem studied lute in New york with Pat O’Brien. He runs the Incunabulum label, lectures on ‘the liberation of the lute’ (Harvard, Wesleyan Universities, Mills College) and performs throughout the world. He collaborated and has records out with M.B. / Maurizio Bianchi, Smegma, James Blackshaw and Tetuzi Akiyama.
The cinematic Joy that never ends offers endless repetition of tortuously minimal beauty. For the brand new full length album by ‘sublime master of the lute’ Jozef van Wissem, five layered mirror image compositions are presented. Featuring legendary filmmaker, Jim Jarmusch, long time fan and friend, playing electric guitar drones on Concerning the Beautiful Human Form After Death, creating subtle, ghostly, meandering feedback. Also featuring spoken word by Jeanne Madic.

Vanishing Twins is the musical project of visual artist Jeanne Madic, playing her minimalist & meditative accordion or her 70′s organ + singing while projecting her own Super-8 films with an old projector. She has opened shows for Julia Kent (Antony & the Johnsons), toured with Arborea in the U.K., and collaborates with Jozef van Wissem, guesting on spoken word at his shows. A member of the band GHQ, he caused a lot of excitement with his solo album Boerum Palace on Three Lobed Recordings just over a year ago. He’s also got an album out soon on Digitalis of his duo with John Trucsinski – the Gunn-Trucsinski Duo album, mastered by Scott Colburn, takes Gunn’s more raga-flavoured guitar and John’s Corsano-esque traps on a transcendental journey that is going to cause a whole lot of listening pleasure in 2011.

CHRIS FORSYTH
Chris Forsyth is known for hypnotic compositions and solo performances on 6- and 12-string guitars that assimilate minimalism and psychedelia with art rock, folk, and blues influences. He is a founding member (with Jaime Fennelly and Fritz Welch) of post-everything gothic junk folk expressionists PEEESSEYE, who have produced 14 releases and over 160 concerts in Europe and the US since forming in 2002, and a member of the elusive experimental group Phantom Limb & Bison. Other notable collaborators have included guitarist Tetuzi Akiyama, trumpeter Nate Wooley, and choreographers Miguel Gutierrez and RoseAnne Spradlin. He released his most recent LP, Dreams, in September 2009 on Evolving Ear. Other recent and upcoming releases include the Dirty Pool LP, with Farfisa organist Shawn Edward Hansen, on Ultramarine, the Chris Forsyth + Nate Wooley CDR The Duchess is Dead, Long Live the Duchess on Chocolate Monk, and a long list of Peeesseye projects, including the Peeesseye + Talibam! collab record on CD (Invada) and 2XLP (Smeraldina-Rima), as well as their forthcoming studio LP Pestilence & Joy on Evolving Ear. Native Philadelphian, Steve Gunn has been a stalwart of the American experimental scene for close to a decade. Gunn has slowly cultivated his own solo work alongside his other involvements with other projects and musicians. Over the course of numerous excellent releases, it became clear that Gunn was a real force in experimental music. Once his solo music started being unearthed, there was no turning back. Steve has been performing a mix of improvisational blues based guitar works, and songs from his latest album ‘Boerum Palace’ on Three Lobed Recordings.
