SAT 13 AUG 2011: SAND CIRCLES (SE) / QUILTS (SE) / YANNICK FRANCK (BE) at CROXHAPOX, GHENT

SMERALDINA-RIMA presents

SAND CIRCLES (SE)
QUILTS (SE)
YANNICK FRANCK (BE)

Saturday 13 August

at CROXHAPOX
Lucas Munichstraat 76/82
9000 Gent

DOORS: 19:00
SHOWS: 20:00
PRICE: 5 €

===================================
===================================

SAND CIRCLES (SE, Not Not Fun)

Melancholic pop chords filtered through malfunctioning drum boxes, echo units and layers of thick tape noise. Tape out on US label NOT NOT FUN and labels KOSMISK VÄG, OH NO MORE TAPES! etc. + upcoming vinyl release.

http://soundcloud.com/sand-circles/

A new name in our Scandinavian jam rolodex is Martin Herterich, a youngish Swede with a closet full of vintage synth rigs and drum boxes and old echo units who tracks woozy instrumental mood-grooves under the Sand Circles moniker and helps book shows in his local art hoods. Midnight Crimes is his debut EP and showcases the prism of styles he can navigate, from minor key shadow-trance soundtracking to more propulsive fog-rhythm cruiser themes to weirdo hook-heavy synth-bounce anthems (drink in “Infinity Pool” for proof). A focused language of cool sonic hieroglyphs get raked and shaped in the Sand Circles zen rock garden, quite pumped to survey what comes next. Pro-dubbed tapes with photocopied and dual-layer silkscreened J-cards, plus a hand-numbered insert.
– Not Not Fun

6 tracks full of lo-fi synth vibes and broken drum machines open up to you giving all the keys from all the doors in this world. Now you have to make a decision. Road movie melodies go on the radio while you\re passing by white castles and huge slow elephants. Their caballeros flourish hands and fire pink and yellow signal stars. Painty sound makes your moves thoughtless and spontaneous. Walking changes with flying but you do not notice this. You look. God, you love to look now.
This is amazing, absolutely fantastic!

“We’re loving this young Swede’s plastic-y and borderline-cute approach to both the beatific and ambient… when not cruising at this Matrix Metals-paced gait, the remaining quiet, misty epiphinal visions feel about as holographic as it comes”
– Altered Zones

QUILTS (SE, Hockey Rawk)

Warm, shimmering synth drones, dreamy vocal samples and ultra-slow rhythms. Has a tape out on swedish label HOCKEY RAWK.

http://soundcloud.com/quiltland

Quilts is Frida-Li Lovgren. The songs were recorded in Stockholm and Visby. She has recorded sounds that have been going around in her head for hours, days. She has recorded the same thing for about 100 times and then the best recording is chosen. The raw and direct feeling is essential. The sounds are outerworldly, yet firmly rooted in the soil.
– Hockey Rawk

YANNICK FRANCK (BE)

Yannick Franck (°1981, Liège, Belgium) is a sound and visual artist. He lives and works in Gent, Belgium. He runs the independent label Idiosyncratics Records. He is the founder of electroacoustic project Y.E.R.M.O. (Venice Biennial 2009, Pavilion of Luxembourg) in which he’s active since 2005 with guitarist Xavier Dubois and drummer Jason Van Gulick. He has collaborated with Gast Bouschet & Nadine Hilbert, Craig Hilton and currently works on several projects with Pietro Riparbelli / K11, Esther Venrooy, Jean-Marie Matoul, Philippe Petit, Steve Kaspar, Stuart Dahlquist, Christian Renou, alone or together with Y.E.R.M.O.. He works as a composer and sound designer for the National Theater of the French Community in Brussels and with companies Artara and Trotz Ensemble. He has exibited his artworks and performed in many countries, including Russia, United States and most of European countries.

TONIGHT! TALIBAM! at Croxhapox Gallery!

Hi there people! Some last minute news…

Tonight Croxhapox is hosting a Talibam! show. For this concert Talibam! will focus on a new performance mode – a special concert where the band performs their songs and material in newly imagined constructions. More theatrical and performative. Concrete poetry merged with comic hyginx and critical theory. Like a meeting of Jim Morrison and Lacanian psychoanalysis.

FB-EVENT: IMPORTANT RECORDS RELEASE PARTY with JOZEF VAN WISSEM/ VANISHING TWINS

IMPORTANT RECORD RELEASE PARTY

Jozef Van Wissem is renowned for his ability to appropriate the Renaissance and Baroque lute in the context of contemporary experimental music. By cutting and pasting classical pieces, reversing melodies, “medieval sampling” and adding processed field recordings, Jozef is able to bridge the language of 17th century music with that of the 21st century without compromising the timbre and resonance of traditional lute playing techniques. Van Wissem studied lute in New york with Pat O’Brien. He runs the Incunabulum label, lectures on ‘the liberation of the lute’ (Harvard, Wesleyan Universities, Mills College) and performs throughout the world. He collaborated and has records out with M.B. / Maurizio Bianchi, Smegma, James Blackshaw and Tetuzi Akiyama.
The cinematic Joy that never ends offers endless repetition of tortuously minimal beauty. For the brand new full length album by ‘sublime master of the lute’ Jozef van Wissem, five layered mirror image compositions are presented. Featuring legendary filmmaker, Jim Jarmusch, long time fan and friend, playing electric guitar drones on Concerning the Beautiful Human Form After Death, creating subtle, ghostly, meandering feedback. Also featuring spoken word by Jeanne Madic.

Vanishing Twins is the musical project of visual artist Jeanne Madic, playing her minimalist & meditative accordion or her 70’s organ + singing while projecting her own Super-8 films with an old projector. She has opened shows for Julia Kent (Antony & the Johnsons), toured with Arborea in the U.K., and collaborates with Jozef van Wissem, guesting on spoken word at his shows. She has recently started a collaboration with acclaimed canadian filmdirector Guy Maddin , composing music for a series of short films named Hauntings (http://tiff.net/essential/specialcommissions/guy) She is currently working on her first EP.

==================================

STEVE GUNN (US):
A member of the band GHQ, he caused a lot of excitement with his solo album Boerum Palace on Three Lobed Recordings just over a year ago. He’s also got an album out soon on Digitalis of his duo with John Trucsinski – the Gunn-Trucsinski Duo album, mastered by Scott Colburn, takes Gunn’s more raga-flavoured guitar and John’s Corsano-esque traps on a transcendental journey that is going to cause a whole lot of listening pleasure in 2011.

EVERY BOLT RUMBLING (NL):
Every bolt rumbling is Arvind Ganga, who uses guitar, effects and objects to create a chaotically oscillating mesh,
vibrating with high energy that oozes out in colliding rhythms, frantic melodies and distant slow grooves ………….
all bathing in the rays of a deep red sun.
http://soundcloud.com/everyboltrumbling

CITY HANDS (NL):
Born a punk and raised a rainbow watcher, Manuel Padding aka City Hands has been active as a music citizen and a renown butterfly observer for a few decades now. As a free-minded follower of Gustav Metzger and a reader of early science-fiction free press, M.P. believes in the creative powers of destruction and in the secret forces lying in forgotten languages. His fluid compositions aim to create rich underground communities that would stand against corruption worldwide.

OUT NOW: Hyena “Outside, The Great Drought” LP & more…

HYENA “OUTSIDE, THE GREAT DROUGHT” LP
(Smeraldina-Rima 18, € 15.00)

NY-based multi-instrumentalist Colby Nathan delivers a debut that contains a jumpy and highly neurotic form of outsiderpop combining bebopdrenched rants and surrealistic torchsongs with lush arrangements that constantly test the limits of self-control and good reason. “Outside, The Great Drought” offers baroque exuberance and teenage angst through sixties inspired craftsmanship that keeps spiraling out of this worldly realm. Think Jonathan Richman, Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks.

Vinyl edition of 500, with two-colour screenprinted open sleeve.

June 3rd 2010: Chris Forsyth, Steve Gunn & Hellvete @ Smeraldina-Rima HQ

CHRIS FORSYTH / STEVE GUNN / HELLVETE @ Smeraldina-Rima HQ — June 3rd 2010

CHRIS FORSYTH
Chris Forsyth is known for hypnotic compositions and solo performances on 6- and 12-string guitars that assimilate minimalism and psychedelia with art rock, folk, and blues influences. He is a founding member (with Jaime Fennelly and Fritz Welch) of post-everything gothic junk folk expressionists PEEESSEYE, who have produced 14 releases and over 160 concerts in Europe and the US since forming in 2002, and a member of the elusive experimental group Phantom Limb & Bison. Other notable collaborators have included guitarist Tetuzi Akiyama, trumpeter Nate Wooley, and choreographers Miguel Gutierrez and RoseAnne Spradlin. He released his most recent LP, Dreams, in September 2009 on Evolving Ear. Other recent and upcoming releases include the Dirty Pool LP, with Farfisa organist Shawn Edward Hansen, on Ultramarine, the Chris Forsyth + Nate Wooley CDR The Duchess is Dead, Long Live the Duchess on Chocolate Monk, and a long list of Peeesseye projects, including the Peeesseye + Talibam! collab record on CD (Invada) and 2XLP (Smeraldina-Rima), as well as their forthcoming studio LP Pestilence & Joy on Evolving Ear. He is the caretaker of Evolving Ear and lives in the City of Philadelpha, USA.

“It’s enough to signal Forsyth’s arrival as an erudite and farsighted guitar stylist, mapping a path that’s hip and scholarly in equal measure.” – Daniel Spicer, The Wire Magazine

“A destructible charm teetering on violence and elegance” – Eric Weddle (Family Vineyard), Signal to Noise Magazine

“…a style as mesmerizing and transcendent as any of his forebears.” – Bob Bannister, TimeOutNY

“Killer on every level.” – Foxy Digitalis

STEVE GUNN
Native Philadelphian, Steve Gunn has been a stalwart of the American experimental scene for close to a decade. Gunn has slowly cultivated his own solo work alongside his other involvements with other projects and musicians. Over the course of numerous excellent releases, it became clear that Gunn was a real force in experimental music. Once his solo music started being unearthed, there was no turning back. Steve has been performing a mix of improvisational blues based guitar works, and songs from his latest album ‘Boerum Palace’ on Three Lobed Recordings.

“Steve Gunn’s prodigous talent for fusing traditional american song structures with a raga influence is almost criminally unheralded. gunn’s songcraft is so strong and his playing style so effortlessly beautiful that folks should be shouting his name from every tall building and mountaintop. it is with such high esteem for the man’s work that three lobed recordings is humbled by the association and thrilled to announce the release of boerum palace by steve gunn. without any doubt, boerum palace is a staggering accomplishment and is certainly gunn’s most assured and confident work to date.” — Three Lobed Recordings

“As major labels continue to exist behind the times, artists and labels with little capital and lesser reputations are producing some of the most innovative, interesting, and inspiring music. Whether it’s creating a new niche in digital technology or looking to once obsolete formats, Agitated Atmosphere hopes to pull back the curtain on a wealth of sights and sound such as Steve Gunn. Steve Gunn is best known for his blistering contributions to the trio, GHQ, but within the walls of Boerum Palace, Gunn steps onto the royal stage for a solo album of penetrating psych and twang that shakes the foundation of the album’s namesake. The album, released at the end of 2009 by Three Lobed, is a stunner to any GHQ follower or Gunn enthusiast. Gunn doesn’t so much as turn his back on his past guitar explorations; rather he reinvents them into a hefty combination of heartfelt southern pangs and acid-laced bends. ” — KEPX Seatlle

HELLVETE
Hellvete is one of the three members who founded the Flemish Funeral Folk collective and a key figure of the satanadelic combo Sylvester Anfang II. Similar to the mothership, his solo work spans from folk-inspired guitar drones to minimalist keyboard esoterica.
